Two public high schools in Bataan have been chosen by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as beneficiaries of an information technology project called "Promoting IT-Enhanced Learning and Interconnecting of Schools in Central Luzon". Rosalie V. Ona, chief of the DOST in Bataan, explained that under the project, Bataan National High School (BNHS) and Orani National High School (ONHS), will each receive a financial grant of P35,750 for the subscription of direct subscriber line (DSL) internet connection for one year plus installation charge. The two pilot schools, according to Ona, will also be provided with the network equipment and accessories to establish the local area network (LAN). The DOST will likewise provide BNHS and ONHS, in addition to the equipment and services, with a user's training course on basic networking and internet; orientation course on web page design and development to help the two schools in putting up their own homepages. The project, which has a duration of one year, hopes to promote information and communication technology (ICT) as a means of effective teaching and learning process, Ona said. However, after the grace period of one year, the recipient schools will have to continue the project but shall be responsible for its maintenance and sustainability, the DOST official pointed out. Funding from the project came from the 2003 Congressional Initiative Allocation of Senator Ramon B. Magsaysay Jr. "Senator Magsaysay's office had allotted P1million for DOST Region III and for the Philippine Council for Advance Science and Technology Research and Development (PCASTRD)", Ona disclosed. The project will be replicated in other secondary schools in Bataan once its implementation becomes successful in the two pilot schools, Ona said. (Source: PIA Feb. '05) |
