Farmer Scientist Training Program (FSTP) is a program employed by the Department of Agriculture (DA), University of the Philippines, Los Baños (UPLB), the Davao Oriental local government unit (LGU), Provincial Science and Technology Center of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST), and other concerned agencies. Today, Davao Oriental farmers now focus in the production of corn and other crops to help boost the economic status of the province. Through government's FSTP, the farmers had learned modern farming techniques. Marginal lands in Cateel and Tarragona, Davao Oriental currently use the said techniques and they are expecting sufficient harvest of corn. The launching of the Farmer Scientist Training Program (FSTP) held last month in the towns of Cateel and Tarragonna was attended by 100 corn farmers.FSTP is an agriculture-based plan founded by Dr. Romulo Davide of UPLB in 1994. Its goal is to help the farmers progress their knowledge and skills by adopting scientific methods to enhance the efficiency of corn and other crops. Farmers are expected to produce between four to six tons per hectare of corn and other crops by applying the FSTP. Cebu, Siquijor provinces, Negros Oriental, Leyte, Occidental Mindoro, and Davao Oriental implement FSTP. [via rdenews.uplb.edu.ph] |
