In cooperation with Limay municipal government and Petron's Bataan Refinery, Panguluhan ng mga Maliliit na Mangingisda ng Limay (Pangmamali) set up a fish sanctuary measuring 7.5 hectares at the waters off Barangay Wawa in the town.Municipal Agricultural Officer Joselito Galicia said that Pangmamali is an alliance of fisher folk groups in all the coastal villages of Limay.
The said fish sanctuary was finally installed with 25 modules of artificial reefs (concrete units) and another 35 modules (bamboo) from the Limay municipal government. In addition, Petron granted another 25 modules of artificial reefs (concrete units), which is also installed at the sanctuary. Presently, Galicia said that the sanctuary is now teeming with fishes like the locally known mamali and kulafu. He added that it also encompasses the mouth of the river. He explained fishes propagate well at the brackish waters at the river's mouth.
About 4, 000 fishers in the town are benefiting from the fish sanctuary. Fish sanctuaries are being established in different municipal seas along Bataan area as part of the sea-use zoning plan adopted by the provincial government, which is first in the country. The provincial government continue to provide assistance to different municipalities that would like to install artificial reefs and fish sanctuaries. Installing these kinds of fish sanctuaries aims to conserve marine resources that are displaced with the destruction of natural coral reefs serving as the natural habitats for fishes and other marine life.
