According to the Department of Energy, the Korea Western Power Co. Ltd and a Korean association partner are planning to have a third site of underground liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Mariveles, Bataan. The Korean group was still completing its feasibility study, a statement from Jesus Tamang, Director for the DOE energy policy and planning bureau. The group received the endorsement last December so they can start the investigation on the geological conditions of the Bataan's site. They already studied 2 sites but the requirements of the group were not met. The feasibility studies conducted by Korean companies are not the only basis in putting up LNG terminal in the country. They also implement a scheme to possibly transfer a 480-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired power plant from Korea. The proposed projects of Korean group may be able to add new competence by 2011 or 2012. According to DOE, this 2010, Luzon grid will need extra 3,000 capacity of MW, 500 MW in Visayas (since 2008), and 600 MW in Mindanao. [via] |
