In line with the coastal-management program of the provincial government of Bataan no less than 45 hectares of coastal areas here have been reforested with mangroves.

The said coastal areas are from Hermosa, Orani, Samal, Abucay, Balanga, Pilar, Orion, Limay and Mariveles.

The provincial government is pursuing the mangrove reforestation in line with their sea-use zoning plan of the province.

According to Butch Baluyot, head of the capitol project management office, the Bataan sea-use zoning plan is the first in the country and will be adapted as model of some coastal provinces.

In addition, Mr. Baluyot highlighted the importance of mangroves with the occasion of typhoons, for serving as defence against big waves.

Mangroves also serve as filter of sea pollution; fish and crustaceans breeding and spawning ground; and fish sanctuary.

As part of the provincial government's project mangrove nurseries were also built Orion and Orani areas.

The provincial government is serious in reforesting all the remaining idle mangrove sites in Bataan coasts to help save the environment and also to prepare in some natural calamities as well. [via businessmirror.com.ph]
