Aetas in Bataan Trained Skills for Survival

Some Aetas in the province of Bataan recently finished a course in professional housekeeping here; indicating a subtle shift from nature-based jobs that Subic's indigenous people mostly sought in almost two decades.

The thirty-six members of the Aeta tribe from two upland villages in Bataan participated the said training to try other jobs for survival.

The August 24 graduation marked the first time that members of Subic's indigenous people composed a whole class at the GP Corporate Personality Enhancement Center, which is conducting retooling courses mostly for workers affected by the economic slowdown.

The training was conceptualized through the support of Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and business and civic organizations in the area.

Gina Prohorrov, GP Center Diretor, said that the 36 Aeta students were very hard working and they underwent weekend trainings for four months. The professional housekeeping course covered the aspects of cleaning standards, computer operation, conversational English, work value and etiquette, and customer service.

Of the 36 Aeta students in this batch, 14 took and passed the assessment test for NC2 certification of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) that qualified them for overseas employment.

With this kind of program, indigenous people from the country could find other way of survival aside from jungle-survival experts or tour guides. Most of them are now open to have other technical skills training to enable them to survive in the lowlands. [via BusinessMirror.com]
