At a depressed, disadvantaged and undeserved area of the district of Abucay, a small school named Hacienda Elementary School is located. This school from where I am teaching for 5 years in just a few meters away from Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Being far from the center of the town, a lot of problems were presently arising. In the system of education particularly, problems such as poverty, malnutrition and the likes are very common. Because of the limited number of classrooms, classes for 2 grade levels were taught in combination type. Insufficiency in number of teachers, school facilities and instructional materials were big hindrances to a good quality of education. As a teacher, I have to think of ways on how to cope up from those problems. Asking assistance from concerned citizens was a great solution. Luckily, there are generous people who are really willing to help our school. Poverty was no longer an excuse for parents not to bring their children to school because basic education was given free. Malnutrition was also solutionized because of the volunteer groups providing feeding program to our students. Indigenous materials from our community were used as an additional instructional materials. Nobody and no one must be a hindrance to a good quality of education. Joanna V.
