The infamous Death March took place after the Fall of Bataan, the last province who gave up to the Japanese invaders. The Death March was a long and hard walk from Mariveles, Bataan to Capas, Tarlas that the captured Filipino and American soldiers underwent. Over 90,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war forced to move from the Bataan Peninsula to prison camps in Capas, Tarlac. Only a little less than 10,000 tired and hungry soldiers died along the route. As an appropriate gift showing respect, gratitude or affection to the heroism of these soldiers, a World War II military shrine called the Dambana ng Kagitingan Shrine of Valor was fully accomplished and inaugurated in 1970. The Shrine of Valor is composed of the Colonnade and the Memorial Cross of great size. The Colonnade is a marble-capped construction with an altar, esplanade and a museum.
