The Mariveles giant bag, a 20-foot-high backpack made by 7 expert makers from the town of Mariveles in the province of Bataan, is now a candidate in the Guinness Book of World Records. The giant bag, made of 80 yards of tarpaulin material and its skeletal structure made of galvanized iron pipes, angular and flat bars, showcases and serves as a symbol of the chief product of Mariveles under the One Town, One Product (OTOP) program. The municipality of Mariveles has been recognized as a manufacturer of export quality bags able to last a long time for the past several years. With the beginning of the OTOP program in 2005, bag manufacturing in Mariveles got a big encouragement for the reason that bag manufacturers were provided with trainings on product development, marketing, financial management, packaging and labeling or branding. The Mariveles giant bag, exposed to view last February 16 as portion of the 63rd anniversary of the liberation of Mariveles, is now on exhibition in front of the Mariveles municipal hall. It can stand against forceful winds and other forces of nature due to its durable frame. Its pocket when unclosed functions as a view deck where tourists can look at the sea watchfully in front of the municipal hall.
The other towns of Bataan must devote serious effort to equal or be better than Mariveles by exhibit gigantically their own chief products under the OTOP program in front of their municipal halls. [Photo by Leo Alen] |
