The Sons and Daughters of Bataan

Who would have known that Bataan is a place of literary figures? As our history has recorded, few of the sons of Bataan have joined the collection of history books. Tomas Pinpin of Abucay and Cayetano Arellano of Orion are only the few people who have been a part of the history. But did you know that many of Bataan’s sons and daughters have taken part in making Bataan a land not only of brave people but also a land of literature and arts? Here are some of the literary figures from our province. 

Let’s start of with...

Nieves Baens del Rosario - she is known to be a good novelist and storyteller that hailed from the town of Orani. Her novel Erlinda ng Bataan had captured the hearts of many of us Filipinos. Her other  novels and stories are Ang Mangingisda, Mga kamay na maliit na Umaakay, Bukas, Kabibi, Maripol, Alamat ng Orani, at Sarili na natin ang daigdig.

Roman Jaring - A writer from the town of Hermosa. His story Huling Habilin was published in the Bulaklak Magazine on Novemeber 15, 1940.

Hilario Labog - A son of Samal. He is also the author of some of the stories in Liwayway, Hiwaga and Bulaklak before 1941, along with Nieves Baens and Rosalia Aguinaldo.

Cecille Lloyd - Cecille was from Mariveles. She was born on February 1, 1908. She is known as the first radio superstar and called the Mystery Singer in the radio station, KZRM. 

Delfin R. Manlapaz - A professor from Abucay. He wrote the song Bayan ko Gumising ka. He established in Quezon City the Manlapaz Publishing Company.

Tomas Pinpin - Tomas Pinpin is one of the known sons of Bataan. He hailed from Abucay and was known as Prinsipe ng Manlilimbag na Pilipino. The Dominican priest Padre Blancas de San Jose enlists the help of Tomas Pinpin in managing the first pulishing company in the Philippines.

Vicente Reyes - Vicenter Reyes was born at Dinalupihan, April 5, 1908, but he spent his whole life living in the town of Samal. He was then called Enteng Walang Gulat. Vicente’s religion was Aglipay and being a good follower of God, he carves the image of Our Lord and the Virgin Mary. He also carves the image of Saint Catherine, the patron saint of Samal. He is also a politician and was elected town councilor and mayor from 1923 up to 1925. 

Rosalia L. Aguinaldo - The author of Ay! Ay! Ay! Rosalia Aguinaldo was from Orion.

Feliza Baens - A teacher for almost 50 years. She became famous for her book, Abakada ng Bataan, which is the first book that was used to teach students how to read.

Julian Cruz Balmaceda - Julian was born at Orion on 1885 but he grew at Bacoor, Cavite. He is good when it comes to writing poetry. His poem Piso ni Anita won the first place during the 1920 Linggo ng Wika.

Diego Carlos - A native of Peurto Rivas. He directed the Santa Cruzan, Sarsuelas and Fiestas.

Toribio David - A son of Hermosa and was good when it comes to music. He formed the Band of Hermosa on 1912. He composed Lourdes, Cantares de Hermosa, and Belmont as tribute for the Filipinos who fought during the war. He also composed the Imno ng mga guro ng Bataan which was dedicated for the teacher of Bataan.

Gregorio de Guzman - He had collected information regarding the towns of Bataan and the history of the province that can be used for studies. Gregorio was from Mariveles.

And last but not the least...

Maximo delos Reyes - Maximo was born at Puerto Rivas, Balanga on July 20, 1887. A writer and poet who joined the league of Julian Cruz Balamceda, Severino Reyes, Lope K. Santos and many more. The play Pawis ng Dukha was shown to different towns like Malabon on 1905 at the Dulaang Libertad. He beat the famous Filipino Lope K. Santos with his poem Si Rizal sa langit. For this, he became a national artist. The only piece that his wife had kept was his masterpiece Dahas Pilak. Maximo was also a writer in the newspaper of Marcelo H. Del Pilar, La Solidaridad and the revolution newspaper, La Independencia. On 1910, he wrote Huling Habilin.

This completes our list of the famous sons and daughters of Bataan. And because of them, they have put Bataan in the world of literature and the arts.
